Making moments last lifetimes. Up close and personal

Background

I've been taking pictures for what seems like all my life, having saved my pennies when I was 11 to buy my first camera, a Kodak Ektra 200 complete with sunny/cloudy exposure controls and what I can only remember as a clip on flash unit.

Living in Mexico City at the time, most of the photographs which resulted from my first camera were of my family and places we'd been to see (including the England National Football Team who trained at our Sports Club prior to the 1986 World Cup).

Over the years, as is probably the case with most photographers, I began to take the art of photography more seriously making use of a variety of affordable compact 35mm and APS cameras, until finally being introduced to Canon's EOS 500N (and subsequently the EOS 33) SLR which showed me exactly what awaits the photographer when he/she is given total control.

Through a number of workshops and qualifications I gained the experience necessary to start developing my own portfolio to the extent to which you see today in this portfolio.

Getting into the darkroom helped me realise the advantage of the other half of photography that you don't see outside the industry, and the extent to which you can manipulate the images that you work with.

The darkroom also helped develop my keen interest in Black & While photography, which has begome my preference as you'll see in the images presented here - but that's not to say I stay away from colour where it is more suitable.

All these skills behind the camera are without meaning if you can't "see" the image that is being captured, be it a human being, landscape, object or abstract.

This is where the ability to see into a subjects persona, mood or intent comes into play - only with an understanding of these can a photographer really capture a subject; this is particularly relevant to photographing poeple.

Of course, as Cartier Bresson would say "you have to be there to capture the moment" - something which you can't always plan for.

Working with more and more subjects, my photography has grown to the extent to which it's becoming more of a hobby, and hence a number of the images contained within this site have come to being.

Please continue to browse my online portfolio to find out more about my photography. If you'd like to discuss anything within the site, feel free to contact me.
